AUSTIN, Texas (April 15, 2025) – Employees, advocates, and allies of the nuclear energy industry last week gathered at the Texas State Capitol in celebration of Texas Nuclear Legislative Day to support smart policies during the 89th Texas Legislative Session.
Hosted by the Texas Nuclear Alliance (TNA), the day focused on the importance of advancing nuclear energy policies for Texas and featured supportive resolutions from state lawmakers, a networking lunch, and meetings between members of the Texas Legislature and Texas Nuclear Legislative Day attendees.
“The robust participation from nuclear industry employees and supporters coupled with the warm reception we received from members of the Texas Legislature highlight nuclear’s rising prominence and undeniable potential in shaping Texas’ energy landscape,” said TNA President Reed Clay. “Just months ago, Governor Abbott issued a bold directive to the Legislature to position Texas at the forefront of America’s nuclear power renaissance, and Texas is wasting no time answering the call. Texas has long been a powerhouse in energy, and we’re built to lead the charge in nuclear too.”
Importantly, significant nuclear energy legislation has been filed this session, including establishing unique programs and innovation funds priming Texas for expanded nuclear energy development. Texas Nuclear Legislative Day attendees encouraged legislators to support a number of pro-nuclear bills, including HB 14, HB 279, SB 388, SB 1061, SB 1534, SB 1535, SB 2060, SB 2967, and the creation and funding of a Texas Advanced Nuclear Energy Fund in HB 500.
Texas Nuclear Legislative Day attendees reiterated to legislators nuclear energy’s tremendous benefits, such as its reliability at a time when Texas’ energy demand is rapidly growing, its long-term affordability, the economic growth opportunities that would be created by investment in nuclear, its role in securing Texas as a global energy superpower and leader in national and energy security, and how nuclear could position Texas and the U.S. as the leader in the global AI arms race.
To recognize Texas Nuclear Legislative Day, resolutions were read on the House and Senate Floors. Representative Cody Harris sponsored House Resolution 788 (HR 788), applauding the nuclear energy industry and its advocates for championing this important cause and noting that, “Texas is poised to embrace a nuclear energy strategy rooted in reliability, economic growth, and national security that will help to create jobs, attract investment, and secure our state’s position as the energy capital of the world and as leaders of the nuclear power renaissance in the United States.” Additionally, Senator Charles Schwertner sponsored Senate Resolution 389 (SR 389) which said in part, “the nuclear power industry represents an important resource for meeting the state’s energy needs.”
